In 2006, Jane Pitfield, one of Toronto's mayoral candidates had mentioned the possibility of selling naming rights to subway stations as a way to help fund the system. As insane as it may sound to some, this idea did gain traction among some supporters in council and the media. At the time, I'd toyed with the idea of creating a corporate-sponsored subway map to raise some awareness around this woman's position, but as it became clear that she was unlikely to win, my interest faded.

However, the idea didn't die with Pitfield's campaign. Toronto City Hall has continued to toy with the idea of selling off the naming rights of public spaces to corporations, so Jayme Turney and Jonathan Goldsbie from the Toronto Public Space Committee started work on a campaign called City for Sale -- an advocacy campaign to raise awareness about the result of this line of thinking as well as push council on considering other options. When I heard about this, I contacted Jonathan to let him know that I had a fun idea in mind that might help them out, and after roughly a week of off-hours toying with Inkscape, and lots of help from the City For Sale volunteers with logo acquisition, "The Wrong Way" was born:

This would make me close to Budweiser Station. How is this a bad thing?

Oh come on .. clearly Wellesley station should become Trojan station. :P

I would actually not have a huge issue with this renaming thing if it made the subway FREE. But anything other than that and forget it. Stations and subway cars are already completely plastered in ads anyway .. is that not enough?

Really? How could you not have a problem with this? Subway stations are landmarks, part of the urban fabric. It's like renaming Yonge street to Coke street, or the CN Tower to the McDonald's Spire. Just like how Rogers carved the Skydome out of Toronto, this insane idea would diminish the city further.

I didn't say I wouldn't have a problem with it, I said I wouldn't have a HUGE issue with it IF and only IF it made the subway FREE. For the last couple of months I have been practically bankrupt because I had to stay at my mom's and was no longer walking distance from work (this on top of the rent I've been paying for an apartment I haven't been sleeping in). Yes, I would hate that the stations were named after corporate brands, but they are already completely plastered with ads for these companies to the point where they almost might as well be named after them. Would I like it if they were? No, but do I like paying $1,300 a year to keep that from happening even though I am STILL being hit in the face with ads at the subway stations all the time. Also no.

Chris .. those stations on the actual TTC map are St. Clair and St. Clair West. So I guess in this version they'd have to be called Tim Horton's and Tim Horton's West. :P

OH WAIT. My bad. Lawrence and Lawrence West, not St. Clair. Which explains why there's a THIRD Tim Horton's station at Lawrence East. Clever.

Dude. That's Eglinton East, Eglinton, and Eglinton West. You'd think that you were the person living in Vancouver :-P

It's understandable though. Who could find anything with those logos everywhere ;-)

Um, "Dude", there is no Eglinton East station. You've been gone too long. :P So you're right, I made a mistake, because the Tim Horton's stops are at Eglinton, Eglinton West .. and then Lawrence East. Which doesn't make much sense, does it. So you can see why I assumed they were all Lawrence stops since that would have made for better continuity. ;)

Holy shit you're right. I was *sure* that Lawrence East was Eglinton East. Now the whole map makes less sense :-(

Sorry for doubting you.

Nah it's OK. I'm embarrassed that I didn't notice that it wasn't Lawrence right across.

Hey, you could always switch it so the Tim Horton's stops are all at Lawrence and move what you have at Lawrence & Lawrence West down to the Eglintons. :)

I love this map, fiercely. maybe because I hate the idea of this actually happening, also fiercely. am I spelling fierce right?

now that I think about it, this map needs more corporate names like Deloitte and Xstrata.

want to make bets on how soon they start putting ads in Museum station?
