The oldest bridge in Florence, remains only due to the grace of a German general back in WW2. As they were losing the city to the Allies, and the Germans were retreating, they destroyed all of the bridges to slow the allied advance. However, given the age and beauty of the bridge, the general spared it and decided instead to destroy the buildings on either side. That is why, to this day, the buildings around the oldest bridge are new, and the buildings around the new bridges are old.
