One of the few remaining buildings after WWII was the headquarters for Goering's Nazi air force. When the Russians took over this half of the city after the war, it was converted to the "Ministry of Ministries", a sort of centre for all ministers from various departments to meet and come up with a collective plan.
This was therefore the site of a big protest in Berlin not too far into Soviet rule. The protest was put down in a bloody fight and there wasn't another uprising of this magnitude for a very, very long time.
