The plaque reads: "Where one burns books, one will, in the end, burn people"
Miraculously, the famous Nazi book burning in Berlin that claimed 20,000 books was not the work of Nazi agents or soldiers, but that of willing academics.
Today, a monument to remember the event has been erected under the square. If you visit the site and peer down through a sheet of glass, you'll find hundreds of empty book shelves... enough for 20,000 books.
