Blog /Earth Hour is this Saturday

March 26, 2009 01:52 +0000  |  Activism Energy Environment Public Space Toronto Vancouver 9

I'm going to participate. I'm not really concerned about the effectiveness of that single hour's darkness on energy consumption as a whole, rather I'm more interested in taking a moment (or in this case, an hour) to reflect on our habits and maybe even convince others to slow down a bit. Besides, who doesn't love a party in the dark?

As always, Toronto is having a party in Nathan Phillip's Square while Vancouver still lacks any real public space capable of such an event. If you know of anything that Vancouver is doing that's interesting please let me know.

Nope. Nothing happening in Vancouver. However, I will likely party in the dark. Maybe I'll stare at a candle and receive some communications from my soul.

I did this last year. In absolute terms I don't think it accomplishes anything, but it's kind of sweet symbolically. Also, I like candles.

If I'm home from MPLS in time, I'll be doing it too.

I liked that movie, but for the silliest of reasons... It was actually strangely nice to recognise the voice of the news reader in the middle there.

Anyway, it was nice to see that an email went around at UBC today reminding people to turn off their lights etc when going home tomorrow. Though it'd be nicer if people just turned their lights off when they leave every night. meh.

And one more thing - give your audience what it wants! How was Japan? :)

I'm sorry that it's taking so long. I've been compiling the pictures but it won't be long now. Probably by this weekend!

Roy, that's really awesome. Any chance you could convince them to leave it that way year-round?

I went to the concert at Nathan Phillips Square, complete with giant LCD screens that were left on throughout the event. The more i think about it (and listen to people like Mez) the more I really just can't support this. Earth Hour is a great way to raise consciousness of the issue, but aren't we well beyond that point? We should be taking action not finding ways to make people feel good about doing something for the environment, when they are not in fact doing anything helpful.

Totally agree Stephen. Sometimes it's just fun to do stuff like this, but that totally makes sense.
